Hawaiian Luau Food - Kalua Pork Recipe

The main food attraction at a Hawaiian luau is the Kalua Pork. The pig is covered in banana leaf or taro leaves and buried in a pit for many hours to cook or roast. Oohs and ahhs generally follow as the whole pig is dug out from the pit.

Taro leaves are called lu'auin the Hawaiian language and this gives the feast its name. A luau is a great celebration and a must-do if you're in Hawaii!

If you enjoy Kalua Pork, there is no need to dig a hole in your back yard just yet...unless you really want to. You can actually make this traditional Hawaiian luau food in a regular oven or in a slow cooker. It's easy!

Easy Hawaiian Luau Recipe - Kalua Pork Recipe for Regular Oven
4 lbs Pork shoulder or pork butt
2-3 tablespoon liquid smoke seasoning
salt to taste

  1. Preheat oven to 275F
  2. Rub pork with liquid smoke. Wrap pork in foil and place on a shallow pan.
  3. Bake at 275F for 5 hours or until pork is tender and can be shredded with fork.
  4. Remove the bone.
  5. Shred the pork meat with forks.
  6. Add salt to pork and toss well.

Notes: I actually did step 2 the night before and left the pork in the fridge overnight so that I can put it in the oven early the next morning. You may add more liquid smoke seasoning for a stronger flavor. Check out our creation:
